چکیده

ABSTRACT: The animal performance on pasture is directly correlated to canopy structure since this influences the herbage consumption. This study was evaluated effects of four pre-grazing heights (12, 20, 28 and 36 cm) Andropogon lateralis Ness intake feeding behavior steers in a natural grassland under intermittent stocking management, using same proportion defoliation (40% reduction height, i.e., post-grazing 7.2, 12.0, 16.8 21.6 cm). experiment conducted total area 14,000 m2, divided into sixteen paddocks 875 m2. Thirty-two were used, uniform pairs according live weight (LW) at start (244 ± 23.0 kg). Each paddock subdivided three plots identical area; first two used for adaptation period third assessment period. A randomized block design with replicates periods. Herbage mass neutral detergent fiber content increased linearly (P < 0,001) increase heights. In contrast, not affected by treatments, mean values 75 g/kg dry matter (DM) upper stratum 83 DM lower stratum. similar between treatments = 0.255), averaging 1.78% LW. Grazing time decreased increasing Total spent grazing, ruminating, idling did differ means 52.6%, 23.0%, 24.2%, respectively. Pre-grazing based predominant species A. lateralis, affect daily steers.

Short-term foraging dynamics of cattle grazing swards with different canopy structures.

The objective of the present experiment was to describe the sward canopy structures of 3 different wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) pastures and relate them to short-term herbage intake rate and foraging dynamics by steers. Pastures were sampled for leaf and stem fractions at the bottom, middle, and top canopy strata. Sward surface heights and tiller and bulk densities were measured. Herbage was se...

Drinking water intake of grazing steers: the role of environmental factors controlling canopy wetness.

Cattle obtain water primarily from the moisture in their feed and from drinking water. On pasture, the moisture content of the diet is influenced by plant tissue water (internal water) and surface moisture (external water), which may include dew, guttation, and intercepted rain, that influence the drinking water requirement. This study investigated the relationship between daily drinking water ...

Herbage intake and behavioural adaptation of grazing dairy cows by restricting time at pasture under two feeding regimes.

The time at pasture of dairy cows is often restricted in the context of extending the grazing season in autumn or at the end of winter. The objective of our study was to evaluate the effects of a restriction of time at pasture on milk production, herbage intake and feeding behaviour in dairy cows according to feeding regime. The four treatments consisted of 4 h or 8 h of time at pasture per day...
